Something new....

Hey everybody,  I was just thinking it might be fun to try something a little new on here, and I'm hoping you'll all be willing to play along.
There are a lot of us here, with a lot of memories about Nana and Gramps, Dad & Ann, and Mom.  And there are a lot of us who don't have any or at least very little knowledge or memories of them. In an effort to find out about and keep a record of our heritage, why don't we start posting some of our memories and questions?
And since I'm not sure how regularly all of us look at the Meeks Messenger, if you're reading this, maybe you could mention it to the others in your family to take a look and leave a comment.

I was just thinking the other day about Nana's house on Butler Circle in Murray.  I remember climbing and picking cherries in the tree out front, and the stone bird bath in the back yard.  The house had a unique smell inside.  Kind of a mixture of old people, peanuts, and steamed brocolli. I always thought it was funny that they called dinner "supper" and ate it very early in the day.  You could always find gingersnaps, rice crispies, fig newtons and clover club potato chips to eat there. The front room was mostly green with a couch made out of wood that I want to say looked like bamboo, but I'm not sure if it really was.  and matching green cushions, and pillows with large flowers stitched on them.  Next to the door was Gramps' chair next to the old fashioned radio.  I remember a pale yellow for the rest of the house, and thought it was strange that Nana and Gramps each had their own bedroom.  Gramps had one of those hula girls on his dresser - the kind you see on dashboards now- that really hula when you nudge them with the tip of your finger.  If you were a kid looking for something to do, there was a set of legos, or coloring books in the hidden desk with in the book cases in the back room, somewhere among the cardinal music boxes and the corn husk dolls.  If you were really lucky, Gramps might let you look at his pocket knife collection which he kept in a tin pail in the closet.  There was a stair case in that back room leading down stairs to Gramps' chiropractic office.

What do you remember about Nana and Gramps' house?

Davey is 1 year old!

We officially have a one year old! Davey turned one on the 14th. We had a great party for him on Saturday and he had a great time with his birthday cake! Oh what a mess! Some of my family came to visit us for a few days for Davey’s big day and we all had a blast together! On the 15th Davey had his 1- year check up, weighing in at 21 lbs. 6.5 oz. (25 percentile) and measuring 31 inches (90 percentile), he certainly is our big boy! Davey is right on track with everything and is happy and healthy which we are very grateful for. He’s started to point at stuff he wants or is interested in. Davey discovered his belly button the other day and gave it a few good pokes and just yesterday he started shaking his head “No”. No longer a baby, on his way to being a man, we love our little Davey and are so blessed to have him.

Big Day!

Emma got her hearing aids today! She chose pretty purple of course -- it's her favorite color. For family night we read a story book that the doctor gave us about a little boy with hearing aids, then we all ended up making noises for her to see what she'd do. She's just her happy self like always, but she does seem to be responding to sound more. :) I'm sure it will be a fun new adventure for her. (and all of us) My job is to keep her from pulling them out, or to find them when she does.....

Baby Dave is 11 months old!

Baby David is growing up fast. He is getting close to walking. Davey can stand alone for a short time, but still prefers crawling, though he is very fast. He can go up and down our staircase, which makes us nervous since he thinks its fun and finds his way to them often. Davey has developed his pallete this month. He likes raisins and can even suck up a spaghetti noodle. Next month is going to be a big ONE. Our little man will be 1 on Oct 14th and cake is on the menu!

Am I a hypochondriac, or do I just love medical centers?

We've had some adventures this week.
We spent Thursday at Primary Children's Hospital with Emma. She had a hearing test there, and we found out that she has moderate hearing loss. According to the chart they showed us, she has never heard the birds, the rain, or the wind through the trees. A regular conversation sounds like a whisper to her. We were pretty surprised. She'll be getting hearing aids. We decided that when she gets them, we'll throw her a hearing party and let anyone who wants to come bring a sound for her to listen to. I'll keep you updated on the progress of things so you can make plans to come. :)

Friday after school, Aiden wanted to be cool like the big kids, and jumped off the top of the slide at the school playground. His leg was hurt, and he couldn't walk on it. (Thanks to Jim for all the medical advice) We spent Friday night in the ER getting x-rays. Thank heavens, it wasn't broken. And Aiden was actually pretty pleased to meet R2D2's friend (the x-ray machine) He was very brave. But we had to keep him off his feet for 2 days. ----not an easy task for a busy 6 year old. He's fine now.

That's really all the news, but it's been such an unusual week, I have to tell you about the rest of it.
Saturday, Emma came down with a high fever that we couldn't break with a tylenol or motrin, so we ended up spending Sunday Evening in the Insta Care.
Monday, we went to an Ear Nose Throat doctor to follow up on Emma's hearing test.
Tuesday (today) we saw a Doctor about Aiden's ADD testing results. (he seems to have ADD not ADHD)
Wednesday, we will actually get the day off (knock on wood)
Thursday, we see an audiologist for more follow up on Emma's hearing, and go to therapy at Primary Children's Rehab Center. (two separate appointments and two separate places)
Don't even ask how much $$$ we're out in co-pays!
It's not uncommon for us to have 1 or 2 doctor's appointments in a week, but this is ridiculous.
What a week.

GO BLUE DRAGONS!

Aiden played in his very first soccer game yesterday.  He did a good job at running up and down the field chasing the herd.  I sat down with him before hand and tried to explain things to him.  About trying to kick the ball into the other team's goal and staying in bounds, only using your feet.  Trying to think of terms he would understand, I ended up explaining things in Star Wars terms: The ball is like a jawa.  There are imaginary droids in the goals.  If you kick the jawa (ball) into the other team's droids (net) the jawa takes one of their droids and you get it (a point)  but you don't want the other team to get the jawa in your goal to take your droids......It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.  But it did to Aiden.  He had fun, and was excited that his team won 6-2 .  Go Blue Dragons!

30th Anniversary

Hey everybody on the Meeks Messenger. Yesterday was our 30th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, my chemo treatments keep me from going out on the town much, so Patti and I celebrated with stake dinner at home and some hand holding while we watched old reruns of the Andy Griffith show. Those shows are pretty funny, especially when I think about growing up in those days. Amazing.

I was posting to my health blog last night and got the great idea to post some 30 year old family pictures here for your enjoyment. These were all taken at our wedding reception. I hope you enjoy them as much I enjoyed looking at them and copying them.

Have a wonderful Day!

Jim

Davey's 10- months old!

Our little man is now 10 months old! I can’t believe that in just 2 months he’ll be one year old! Davey is doing a lot of new things- he started clapping his hands a week ago and vibrates his lips and then rubs with his finger to make a fun noise. Davey is getting to be pretty quick at walking along the furniture and is becoming more confident in his standing. He had his first haircut yesterday. It looks like Davey has curly hair just like his mom and dad. It was starting to curl up in the back, so I figured it was time to cut it. He was very patient through the whole thing and is so handsome with his new do! He now has eight teeth and loves to bite on everything, especially Mommy and Daddy!

Say Cheese.....

I'm not a photographer. But I have a new camera that I've been trying to figure out. I thought I'd post these pictures from our recent trip to St. George. It was fun to visit with Colin, Robin & Karden while we where there. You can get a larger view of the pictures if you double click on them.

We had a great visit with everyone! I’m so grateful for families! I have a greater appreciation for Brian’s family and families in general.

Hope you are all doing well. We can’t wait to see everyone and hope we get to soon!

SON OF A FITCH!....(and a daughter.)

Just a new updated photo of Aiden and Emma to share. We are all doing well at our house. After a very hot, and very busy summer, we are getting ready for school to start again in a couple of weeks. Aiden will be in the first grade where he "gets three reccesses every day!" and Emma will increase her time at preschool from 2 days a week to 4 days a week. They both LOVE school. I'm not sure how I'll handle all that time to myself other than to say that my house will be a lot cleaner!

Hello Ladies,
There was a lot of e-mailing going on about the Meeks Girl's Weekend but I never heard if any dates were actually decided on.  Was it decided that we'd have it in September?  Please comment and let me know.  I'll need to buy my plane ticket soon if so.  I cannot wait to see everyone!  Thank you!

Happy Birthday Karden and Grandpa Derek!!!

I know this is a little late but Karden is now 1 years old!!! Collene and Derek came down to St. George on the 4th of July to celebrate we had a ton of fun. We went to the water fountains on main street in down town St. George, then played in the river for a while. Then we celebrated Karden and Grandpa Derek's Birthday. Here is a picture of the two of them eating their birthday cake. Grandpa had just as much fun as Karden did. It was nice seeing and visiting with them. Well, life in St. George is Great!! Colin is welding for a company who makes and installs metal railings, and I'm still working as an interpreter for the state as well as freelance interpreting in the community. Work keeps us busy, but we still find time to play on the weekends. We usually end up going on hikes every Saturday. We love it. Karden is having a ball down here. He loves to swim and play in the park. I can't believe how much he has grown in the past year. If you want to see more pictures of him for this past year just check out our blog. Well, We miss you all and hope every one is doing well.

Davey 9-months old

Here’s our 9-month old David! He had his 9-month check up yesterday. Davey weighs 20 lbs. 7 oz., he’s 29.75 inches tall and his head is 17 inches. Davey has 6 teeth and is crawling all over! He pulls himself up to standing on anything he can find. He especially loves to climb up his daddy! Davey is great at climbing the stairs but we’re still working on going down them safely. He loves to chase the kitties around the house and pull their tails. He expresses his desires and emotions more each day and never ceases to amaze us with all he can do!

FREE TO A GOOD HOME.....(the dresser, not the dog.)

I am getting rid of this dresser. Some of you may recognize it. It goes with the bunk beds we all grew up on. You remember those avocado green ones? I have it in my head that Dad or Gramps built the whole set, but that's probably just the thing where as a kid you think your Dad built EVERYTHING. anyway, it's a good dresser made entirely of real wood. It's a little worse for the wear in a few places, with a little bit of love, and a new coat of paint it could be as good as new! I even photoshopped it to show you all it's lovely potential. If you're interested, let me know in the next week or two. It seems like it should stay in the family. ya know? but, I guess I'll send it to the D.I. if I have to. **Labrador not included.

Star Trek Spoof

I think this is my first ever post on here, we've just been busy with the same old things, School, work, etc. But I post random tangentlike stuff on my personal blog, Jots and Tittles from Angie's Mind, and you are welcome to check it out, or not. Below is a post from my own blog, but Ryan would definitely want you guys to know about this:

"So Ryan, creative genius that he is, put together a 2 minute claymation short last semester. It took forever, and engulfed 16 plus weeks of his life.

I am really proud of him, he is not quite satisfied with the footage, but I’m telling everyone about it because it’s so creative and I think it’s just good.

I even like the script he wrote! And if you know me, I pick apart dialogue and plots like there is no tomorrow.

He absolutely will not post this on youtube because it will go in his portfolio. So, for all those who want to see it, we are scheduling small screenings, and if you are interested please contact us.

FYI, the short is an original Star Trek/Star Wars spoof, Ryan will call it a sci-fi spoof because of a Terminator reference. The footage he has is not the professional transfer, he should get that in the middle of August, but its nice to finally have something to show for last semester."

Do You Believe in Fairies?

Legend says that fairies come out on the shortest night of the year. In celebration of Summer Solstice, Engh Gardens sponsored a Fairy Festival including a fairy garden contest. Hannah and Ava went to a class last week to learn how to build a fairy garden, while they were there Studio 5 came and filmed so they got to be on TV! You can imagine how excited they were about that.
As if that wasn't enough, Hannah entered a garden in the contest and was the winner for her age group! She was soooo happy and Ava was so excited for her sister that she kept giving her tight squeezes saying, "I LOVE you Hannah! I'm SO happy you won!" It was super fun. DeAnn went with us, otherwise I wouldn't have tried to go by myself with the girls and Easton. They got to dress like fairies and be in a fairy parade. Hannah won a $25 gift certificate so they each got a fairy from the gift shop. It was a magical day! Hannah also lost a tooth that morning so the tooth fairy came last night. The girls are certain that she visited their garden and had a party last night. We hope you all have an enchanted summer!

Davey's 8-months old

Here’s our little 8-month old Baby Davey! He’s doing great as ever. Davey is sssoooo close to crawling, he did his first crawling steps yesterday and more today. Scooting is still his favorite and quickest method of getting around. He’s expressing himself so much more now and is very interested in what is going on around him. We’ve been taking Davey to swim classes the past few weeks and he loves being in the pool, splashing around and chasing the pool toys. He’s discovered the stereo and loves to push all the buttons, especially the volume button! Davey turns the music up and stops and listens, he especially likes “Get Back” by The Beatles. Hahaha!  How are everyone else's kids?  We'd LOVE to see some pictures!
